  1. MOSQUITOES --
  2. and other insects are common throughout Alaska, partic-
  3. ularly in the Interior, where summers are warm. Coastal
  4. areas, with wet, cool summers, have fewer mosquitoes
  5. than do inland areas, but they may make up for it with
  6. other biting insects. Mosquitoes are little problem in
  7. cities. In the bush, they are often at their worst in
  8. June, tapering off in July. Other biting insects appear
  9. mid-summer through mid-September: no-see-ums, white
  10. socks, black flies, and moose flies. With proper prep-
  11. aration -- and attitude -- you can still enjoy the out-
  12. doors. Always take with you (and use) insect repellent
  13. lotion or spray. Choose brands with a high percentage
  14. of DEET (diethyltolumide), the  active ingredient. Re-
  15. member, however, that the solvent used in most insect
  16. repellents also disolves many plastics, including eye-
  17. glasses frames, and the imitation-leather covering on
  18. most cameras and binoculars. Keeping clothing snugly
  19. closed will help keep insects off, as will a head net.
  20. Tying your cuffs closed will help keep out sand fleas.
  21. As far as attitude goes -- just keep in mind that, if
  22. it weren't for the mosquitoes, your favorite camping
  23. site would probably be overrun with tourists!
